Modern cars offer many innovative solutions to increase the safety and comfort of driving. One of them is the “invisible wiper”, which is a special hydrophobic coating applied to the car windshield.
A hydrophobic surface tends to repel water. The word “hydrophobic” comes from the Greek words “hydro” meaning water and “phobos” meaning fear. On such a surface, water molecules do not spread out evenly, but gather in droplets. This is the result of the material’s low surface energy, which prevents water from adhering to it. Hydrophobic surfaces are used in many fields, from automotive (window coatings) to textiles (water-resistant materials).
An invisible wiper is a coating of chemicals such as siloxanes, PTFE (Teflon), and alcohols that form an ultra-thin, invisible layer on the glass. The purpose of this coating is to fill the microscopic pores in the glass, preventing the accumulation of water and dirt. It creates a very smooth surface.
Thanks to its hydrophobic properties, the coating ensures that raindrops and dirt do not stick to the glass, but instead run off, significantly improving visibility when driving in the rain. But there is a catch. A gust of air is needed for the water to “magically” run down the windshield. You can only see this effect at speeds above 65 km/h most of the time. For typical city driving, up to a maximum of 50 km/h, the effect of the wiper will be small.

• Dry the glass by wiping it with a dust-free cloth.
• Using an applicator (often supplied with the product), spread the product evenly over the surface. It is critical to do this thoroughly, to cover the entire surface. A very thin layer will suffice.
• Once the product has been applied, the surface should normally dry. The drying time may vary depending on the product, so it is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• After the coating is dry, it is recommended to polish the surface with a microfiber cloth to get a better water-repellent effect.
In addition to car windshields, hydrophobic coatings can be used on other smooth surfaces, such as shower glass and boat windows, where they also help keep things clean and improve visibility.
